Two years ago, the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami swept across the country’s coast wreaking untold amounts of damage. One of the quake’s victims was an old forest in Rikuzentakata, Iwate, which was obliterated by severe ground tremors and the crashing sea waves that followed. Of the 70,000 timbers that were felled, a sole tree survived. The ”miracle pine,” as it’s called by locals, withstood one of the greatest natural disasters recorded, only to perish in September 2012 after it succumbed to toxic levels of saline that had been deposited by flooding.

Now, a sculpture commemorating the miraculous 88-foot-tall tree is set to open in an event that will mark the second anniversary of the disaster.

The work, seen rising from behind a screen of scaffolding above, was created using plastic molds taken of the pine’s trunk and branches, plus steel needles to recreate the leaves of the tree’s crown. The top portion of the “tree” was lifted into place by crane last week, and thus, completing the faithful replica. The 1.4 ton-sculpture is anchored to the spot where the original once stood — and where it was planted in the Edo period and remained rooted through two tsunami in 1896 and 1933 — by latticework to be removed this week, when the memorial is scheduled to be unveiled.

Massages to the Public

Coordinated by Public Art Fund in 1982 and it continued until 1990. The Spectacolor light board, which Messages was displayed upon, in New York’s Time Square was used as animated commercial space. The ad designer at Spectacolor, Inc., Anne Dickinson, conceived of the idea that the board should be used for non-commercial art through the medium of a commercial platform. She was excited for it’s potential propaganda, and brought the idea to the Public Art Fund, which is an organization interested in public display of art existing outside of gallery walls.

Messages compromised of 85 different animations from contemporary artists including those seen above: Act Up, Barbara Kruger, jenny Holzer, Keith Haring, Robin Winters, and Jon Kessler. Each 30-second animation played for a month, sandwiched between a 20-minute loop of commercial advertisements. The messages were intended to address the public on varying topics like consumerism, patriotism, greed, and social ailments. The use of commercial media functioned to blur the line between commercial art and fine art, while also giving a pause to the stream of consumerist images. This was Jenny Holzer’s first use of an electric light display of her text work, a tactic that she has continued to use inside of commercial and gallery space, as well as in public.

In the modern practice of relational aesthetics, I think that Messages to the Public could now function with more audience participation; perhaps a call for animations and text could be sent out to the public to participate within the dialogue of advertisement and public art.

“a simple intervention on a french quayside, foster + partners newly inaugurated ‘port vieux’ pavilion is a literal reflection of the idyllic surrounding wharf. the 46 by 22 meter canopy is made of highly polished stainless steel such that it reflects the inverted pedestrian area and harbor at the water’s edge. the project is part of a larger move to reclaim quaysides as civic spaces and is accompanied by the relocation of platforms and clubhouses over the water. the landscape design was developed by michel desvigne and includes a subtle granite surface that mimics the original limestone cobbles. these elegant and roughly textures materials weave into the port setting and are mirrored in the covered space, which anticipates becoming a space for events, markets and special occasions. while the gleaming pavilion appears to be a quiet silver line on the horizon, the impact of the lightweight steel structure’s underbelly is undeniable. the grand space of the harbor is multiplied and invites users to respect and enjoy the waterscape by becoming both spectator and a component of the spectacle.” (x)

Daniel Canogar - Sikka Magnum, 2013

Sikka is a sculptural video installation constructed from 360 used DVDs. This multi-thematic piece was inspired by “sikka”, the gold coins sewn to clothing dating back to Babylonic times that eventually became the shiny plastic objects we know today as sequins. By projecting the contents of the DVDs back onto their surfaces the artist continues to investigate both new uses for discarded objects as well as his interest in combining the phantasmagorical properties of cinema with its physical elements.
